Trial name: Effects of selected herbs and a natural flavouring compound in feed on broiler performance, breast meat yield and quality under heat stress conditions
Year: 2022
Country / partners: R2 Agro A/S (Denmark) in collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin, Institute of Animal Nutrition (Germany)
Heat stress and early setbacks hit broiler results fas - lower intake, weaker growth, and poorer feed conversion. This controlled trial tested InflaMove® (a phytogenic herbal premix with a natural flavouring compound) to document effects on growth performance, feed efficiency, and breast meat yield/quality under mild heat stress (28°C from day 21–35).
3 treatmentt groups:
- T1 control
- T2 control + 300 ppm Inflamove
- T3 control + 600 ppm Inflamove
A total of 315 Cobb 500 male broilers were assigned to three groups: Control, +300 ppm InflaMove®, and +600 ppm InflaMove® (7 replicates × 15 birds/pen) over a 35-day starter/grower program.
Results
- Overall weight gain to day 35 increased 6.4% with InflaMove® 300 ppm (2252.6 g → 2397.6 g)
- Better feed efficiency: Overall FCR improved from 1.48 to 1.41, a 4.7% reduction in feed per kg gain (300 ppm and 600 ppm).
- Stronger start: By day 14, body weight increased 8.1% with 300 ppm (360.4 g → 389.5 g, p < 0.001), supported by 15% higher starter feed intake in week 1 (97.6 g → 112.2 g, p ≤ 0.01).
- More breast meat: Breast muscle weight increased 8.7% with 300 ppm (412.1 g → 448.1 g, p ≤ 0.05).
- Meat quality shift: Breast meat pH at 24 hours decreased from 6.18 to 6.02 (down 2.6%) and 5.99 (down 3.1%) (p < 0.001).
Conclusion
This controlled broiler trial shows that InflaMove® supports performance under heat-stress pressure. With 300 ppm, birds ate more in the first week (+15%), finished heavier (+6%), and produced more breast meat (+8%) versus control. Combined with improved feed conversion and a shift in 24-hour breast pH, the results point to a practical tool for producers aiming to protect output and breast yield when conditions challenge intake and growth.
