Milk fever – prevent it before it strikes

Milk fever is one of the most costly and underestimated metabolic disorders in dairy herds. It’s triggered by a sudden drop in blood calcium levels around calving and while clinical cases are easy to spot, it’s the subclinical cases that often go unnoticed and quietly impact performance.
At R2 Agro, we offer smart milk fever prevention strategies built on fast-acting calcium bolus for dairy cows. Our solutions are based on highly soluble calcium salts combined with active vitamin D3 (calcitriol) for optimal calcium absorption.

The impact of milk fever and why prevention makes a difference

Around 5–10% of dairy cows develop clinical milk fever, but up to 50% may suffer from subclinical cases that reduce feed intake, delay recovery and increase the risk of secondary issues like ketosis, retained placenta and mastitis. Older cows and high producers are especially vulnerable.

Milk fever affects:

  • Muscle and nerve function
  • Immune response and reproductive performance
  • Long-term milk yield and profitability

With the right calcium bolus, prevention is simple, safe and effective. Our boluses ensure fast uptake via the rumen, with proven blood calcium stabilisation before and after calving

Our approach to milk fever
prevention

We focus on proactive calcium support. Our calcium boluses combine fast and sustained release of calcium and magnesium to stabilise blood calcium levels before, during and after calving.

The benefits:

  • Quick calcium absorption in the rumen
  • Easy and accurate dosing
  • Reduced risk of errors compared to liquid supplements
  • Natural, residue-free composition

Our feed solutions for milk fever prevention are backed by science and designed for performance – helping dairy producers maintain healthy, high-yielding herds.

Let’s talk milk fever prevention

Need help choosing the right calcium support? Our experts are ready to guide you.

Milk fever is a metabolic disorder caused by low calcium levels in the blood, typically around calving. It can lead to muscle weakness, reduced feed intake and severe health issues if left untreated.

Prevention starts with timely calcium supplementation. Our calcium solutions for dairy cows provides both fast and sustained release of calcium to help maintain stable blood levels before and after calving.

Our calcium solutions are applicable for any kind preference. We offer solutions where calcium is primary like Calibol bolus and liquid Calcium Balance with drench pistol or combination solutions like EnergyCal and LactoDrench supplying both calcium, water, electrolytes and energy for the fresh cow.

Typically, the supplementation of calcium is given immediately after calving, with a second dose 10–14 hours later. In high-risk cows, it may also be given before calving or after intravenous calcium treatment – always under guidance from a nutritionist or vet.
